Most rucking shoes look like rucking shoes. They are technical, athletic, and often clearly designed for one thing: putting miles under your feet with weight on your back.
The GORUCK Mackall 45 takes a different approach.
With its suede upper and old-school sneaker appearance, it looks much closer to a regular everyday shoe than most footwear designed for rucking. But underneath that suede upper is still the same performance-focused foundation GORUCK built for spending long hours on your feet.
So, can one pair of shoes really handle rucking, walking the dog, going to the gym, traveling, playing a casual round of golf, and everyday life?
That was the question we intended to answer in our GORUCK Mackall 45 review.

Key Features of the GORUCK Mackall 45
- Premium Pigskin Nubuck Suede Upper: The suede upper gives the Mackall 45 a much more casual and traditional appearance than a typical rucking shoe. It is one of the main reasons these shoes can easily transition from a ruck to everyday wear.
- Wide Toe Box: The neutral last and wider toe box provide more room for your feet, which can make a noticeable difference when spending long periods walking or rucking.
- 13mm Heel-to-Toe Drop: The Mackall 45 has a relatively high heel-to-toe drop designed to support walking and rucking. The higher sole also gives the shoe a noticeably different feel from flatter training shoes like the GORUCK Ballistic Trainers.
- Shock-Absorbing EVA Midsole: The EVA response foam provides cushioning and support without making the shoe feel excessively soft or unstable.
- Triple-Compound High-Traction Rubber Outsole: The outsole is built to provide grip and durability across different surfaces.
- Dual-Density Comfort Insert: The included insert adds another layer of comfort for longer periods on your feet.
- Traditional Flat Athletic Laces: Instead of a more technical-looking lacing system, the Mackall 45 uses classic punch eyelets and flat athletic laces.
- Synthetic Suede Interior: GORUCK uses a smooth synthetic suede lining designed to reduce friction around the foot.
- Suede Styling With a Performance Sole: This is really the defining feature of the shoe. The upper looks like something you could wear casually, while the sole is built more like performance footwear.
According to GORUCK, the Mackall 45 weighs 12.6 ounces per shoe in a size 9 and has a 13mm heel-to-toe drop, wide toe box, EVA midsole, dual-density insert, and high-traction rubber outsole. The upper combines premium pigskin nubuck suede with full-grain cow leather details.
Why We Decided to Review the GORUCK Mackall 45
We have reviewed plenty of gear designed specifically for rucking, and most of it is easy to categorize. A rucksack is a rucksack. A rucking boot is a rucking boot. A training shoe is a training shoe.
The Mackall 45 is harder to put into one category.our back.
That was the question we intended to answer.
GORUCK designed it as a crossover shoe that can be used for rucking and workouts while still looking appropriate for everyday situations. The suede upper immediately caught our attention because it makes the shoe look much more like a regular sneaker than the typical performance footwear you would expect from a rucking brand.
That made us curious.
Instead of testing the Mackall 45 only during rucks, Jason wore them during normal life as well. He used them for walking, walking the dog, gym sessions, everyday activities, and even golf..
Reasons to Trust Our Expertise
We do not review rucking gear by taking it out of the box, wearing it once, and repeating the manufacturer’s specifications.
We have spent years around rucking and GORUCK equipment, so we know what to look for when it comes to comfort, stability, support, and how footwear performs under load. More importantly, we actually wore the Mackall 45 in situations where a crossover shoe needs to perform.
How We Tested the GORUCK Mackall 45
We wanted to see how the Mackall 45 performed beyond a traditional rucking workout.
During testing, Jason wore the shoes for:
- Everyday activities
- Walking
- Walking the dog
- Rucking
- Gym sessions
- Casual golf
- General forward and backward movement
Benefits of the GORUCK Mackall 45
They Look More Like Everyday Shoes Than Most Rucking Footwear
This is probably the first thing you will notice about the Mackall 45.
The suede upper gives the shoe a completely different personality from the regular Mackall and from most performance-oriented rucking shoes. You could wear these while walking around town, traveling, meeting friends, or going out for dinner without looking like you forgot to change after a workout.
That is a bigger advantage than it might initially sound.
Many people who ruck regularly end up owning separate shoes for training, walking, and casual use. The Mackall 45 can potentially cover several of those situations with one pair.
The Wide Toe Box Makes Them Comfortable for Everyday Wear
The wider toe box was another feature Jason appreciated.
A shoe designed for spending a lot of time on your feet should not feel restrictive, especially when you are walking or carrying weight. The Mackall 45 gives your toes noticeably more room than many traditional sneakers.
This also contributes to the crossover appeal of the shoe.
Traditional Laces Are a Simple but Welcome Feature
This may seem like a small detail, but we liked the traditional laces a lot more than some new versions.
The classic flat athletic laces fit the overall look of the and make the shoe feel more familiar than some modern performance footwear. You can easily adjust the fit depending on what you are doing without dealing with an unusual or overly complicated lacing system.
The Higher Sole Works Well for Rucking
The sole is where the Mackall 45 feels much more like a purpose-built rucking shoe.
Compared with something like the GORUCK Ballistic Trainers, the Mackall has a noticeably higher and more substantial sole. Jason found this particularly useful for rucking because the shoe provides more cushioning and support while covering distance.
The 13mm heel-to-toe drop is also significant.
The Mackall 45 does not have the flatter feel of a training shoe. Instead, it is built more for walking and moving forward over longer distances, particularly with weight on your back.
For rucking, this was one of the strongest aspects of the shoe.
They Are Heavier Than Regular Sneakers, but Not Too Heavy
The Mackall 45 is not a lightweight running shoe.
You notice that there is more shoe under your foot compared with many casual sneakers or minimalist trainers. However, Jason did not find them excessively heavy.
That is an important distinction.
The extra weight comes with more structure, cushioning, and support. For everyday walking and rucking, that tradeoff makes sense.
If your main priority is finding the lightest possible shoe for running or high-speed workouts, there are better options. But for a shoe designed to do several different things reasonably well, the weight feels appropriate.
They Perform Well During Forward and Backward Movement
Mackall 45 are comfortable shoes for walking, rucking, and general gym activities.
Moving forward feels natural, which should not be surprising given the shoe’s design. Walking and rucking are where the Mackall feels most at home.
Backward movement also felt comfortable.
For standard gym sessions that do not require constant aggressive cutting or side-to-side movement, the shoes performed well enough to remain practical.
Downsides of the GORUCK Mackall 45
The Higher Heel Can Rub Against Your Ankle With Low-Cut Socks
The heel sits relatively high, and when worn with low-cut ankle socks, the back of the shoe can occasionally rub against the ankle area. It was not a major problem, but it is something worth mentioning.
Suede Requires More Care
The suede upper is one of the best things about the Mackall 45, but it also comes with a downside. Suede is simply harder to keep looking clean.
If you are wearing these shoes for casual activities, this may not be a big concern. But if you regularly ruck through mud, dirt, rain, or rough terrain, you will probably need to spend more time maintaining the shoes than you would with a synthetic performance upper.
They Are Not Our First Choice for Lateral Movement
This is where the Mackall 45 starts to show that it cannot truly be the perfect shoe for everything.
Jason found them good for forward and backward movement, but less suitable for aggressive lateral movement. If your workouts involve a lot of cutting, quick changes of direction, or constant side-to-side movement, there are more specialized shoes available.

Who Should Avoid the GORUCK Mackall 45 and Why?
The Mackall 45 will not be the right choice for everyone. You may want to consider another shoe if:

Best GORUCK Mackall 45 Alternatives
If you like the idea of GORUCK footwear but need something more specialized, there are several alternatives worth considering.
The GORUCK Ballistic Trainers may be a better choice if your priority is gym training and more dynamic movement. Their lower and flatter profile makes them better suited to certain strength and conditioning workouts, although they do not offer the same everyday sneaker appearance or rucking-focused sole.
The regular GORUCK Mackall is worth considering if your primary focus is rucking and you prefer a more traditional performance upper. You will get a more technical look while keeping the Mackall platform designed around spending long periods walking and carrying weight.
If you need more ankle coverage and a shoe better suited to rougher terrain, one of GORUCK’s MACV rucking boots may make more sense.
Our Final Verdict on the GORUCK Mackall 45
The GORUCK Mackall 45 is one of those shoes that makes more sense the more you actually wear it.
At first, the concept sounds ambitious. A suede shoe for rucking, workouts, travel and everyday life sounds like it could easily end up being mediocre at all of them.
That was not our experience.
We found the Mackall 45 comfortable for everyday use, walking, rucking, gym sessions, walking the dog, etc. The wide toe box and supportive sole make them comfortable for spending long periods on your feet. The suede upper makes them look much more like a regular sneaker than most rucking shoes.
The sole is also one of the biggest advantages. It is higher and more supportive than something like the Ballistic Trainers, making the Mackall feel better for rucking and longer periods of walking.
There are compromises.
The higher heel can occasionally rub against the ankle when wearing low-cut socks, the suede upper will also require more care than a typical synthetic training shoe and it’s not the shoe we would choose for aggressive lateral movement or highly dynamic sports.
If you want one pair of shoes that can handle a ruck and still look good when you are going out, the GORUCK Mackall 45 is a genuinely compelling option.
FAQs
Are the GORUCK Mackall 45 comfortable?
The Mackall 45 was comfortable during our testing, particularly because of its wide toe box and supportive sole. One minor issue Jason noticed was occasional rubbing around the ankle when wearing low-cut socks.
What is the difference between the Mackall 45 and a regular Mackall?
The biggest difference is the suede upper and more traditional sneaker appearance. It is designed to provide the performance characteristics of the Mackall platform while looking more appropriate for casual and everyday wear.
Are the GORUCK Mackall 45 good for golf?
They worked fine for casual golf, but they are not a dedicated golf shoe. If you play golf regularly and need specialized traction or golf-specific features, a proper golf shoe will still be the better choice.
Do the GORUCK Mackall 45 run true to size?
GORUCK recommends checking its sizing guidance before ordering, as individual fit can vary depending on foot shape and how much room you prefer in the toe box.
Can you wear the GORUCK Mackall 45 without breaking them in?
The Mackall 45 is designed with cushioning and a comfortable interior, so they should not require an extensive break-in period like a traditional leather boot. However, we still recommend wearing them for shorter periods before taking them on a long ruck.
How should you clean the GORUCK Mackall 45?
Because the Mackall 45 uses a suede upper, cleaning them requires more care than cleaning a typical synthetic training shoe. Remove loose dirt with a suitable brush, follow GORUCK’s recommended care instructions and air dry the shoes.
