New GORUCK M24 Review: First Look at the Newest Rucking Pack

Table of Contents

Over the years, we’ve tested just about every GORUCK model (and other brands, of course) worth mentioning: the GR1, the Bullet, the Rucker 4.0, and the M23 are just some of them. M23 became a personal favorite for its balance of utility and comfort.

So, when GORUCK quietly dropped the M24, I took notice. It definitely marked a shift in design philosophy. A little more heritage, a little less tactical. I picked up the 21L and 26L Heritage Waxed Canvas versions a few days after launch because I wanted to see whether this new offering actually earns a spot in GORUCK’s legendary lineup or if it’s just the M23-lite with a fancy fabric.

How does the pack feel under 30 lbs? How’s the sweat management on a long ruck? Does the waxed canvas actually perform, or is it just there to look good in an Instagram post?

That’s what this GORUCK M24 review is about. If you’ve been wondering whether it’s worth the switch or the upgrade, you’re in the right place.

GORUCK M24

Both versions are available in only one color. The GORUCK M24 – Heritage Waxed Canvas comes in Slate, while M24 – Lightweight Ripstop ROBIC® is Dark Blue + Topo Map.

Key Features of the GORUCK M24

  • Martexin Wax Finish with Heritage-Grade Durability: The M24 Heritage is built with a Martexin Waxed Canvas finish, a time-tested process that’s been proven effective for over 170 years on outdoor gear.
  • Bombproof Laptop Compartment with False Bottom: Positioned right against your back, the reinforced laptop compartment offers top-tier protection for your tech. It features GORUCK’s signature false bottom, which means when you drop your pack onto the ground, your laptop is suspended and shielded from impact.
  • Top Loader Design for Upright Packing: Rather than a clamshell or front-load approach, the M24 uses a top-loading lid that flips up to reveal a wide opening. Because of its structure, the ruck stays upright while packing.
  • Quick Side Access to the Main Compartment: One of the most functional features is the side zipper, giving you quick access to the main compartment without taking the ruck off completely.
  • Extra-Padded Shoulder Straps and Top Handle: Comfort matters and GORUCK made sure the shoulder straps and top carry handle are extra padded on the M24.
  • Removable Frame Sheet for Load Stability: Inside the back panel, there’s a removable, hard plastic frame sheet that gives the pack structure while supporting the laptop compartment.
  • Top Closure System with Fidlock Buckles and Drawstring Cinch: This combo keeps your gear safely inside, even during intense movement or bad weather.
  • Multiple Internal Storage Pockets: Inside the main compartment, you’ll find two internal mesh pockets, alongside the primary main compartment and the reinforced laptop section.
  • Two External Water Bottle Pockets: On the outside of the ruck, there are two bottle pockets, one on each side. These are sized for standard water bottles.
  • Key Clip Inside the Lid’s Mesh Pocket: Inside the mesh pocket on the interior side of the top lid, you’ll find a built-in key clip, a small detail that saves a lot of time.
  • Adjustable and Removable Sternum Strap: The included sternum strap helps distribute weight across your chest and relieve shoulder pressure during longer or heavier rucks.
  • Leather Handle and Removable Leather Patch: The top carry handle is wrapped in full-grain leather, providing a premium touch and a comfortable grip.

Why We Decided to Review the GORUCK M24 Rucksack

The GORUCK M24 represents a new step forward from the much-loved M23, which remains one of my personal favorite rucks for both training and classic everyday carry. The M23 set a high bar with its blend of durability, organization, and comfort under load, qualities that made it a staple for many ruckers. So, when the M24 was announced, it immediately caught my attention because I wanted to see fresh updates.

What really intrigued me was how GORUCK chose to offer the M24 in several different materials. This diversification suggests they’re aiming to appeal to a broader audience.

Given these factors, I felt it was crucial to put the M24 through its paces to see whether it delivers on the promise. And to be honest, since M23 is discontinued, I just wanted to know if we can still count on GORUCK M-series.

Reasons to Trust Our Expertise

Experience counts in every field and rucking is no different. Our huge rucking experience gives us the right to realistically evaluate even iconic brands like GORUCK.

I can guarantee you that Jason, myself, and the rest of our rucking team rucked with every GORUCK model, ranging from the ultra-durable Cordura GR1 and the larger GR2, to the versatile M23, and so on.

Over the years, we have used all those backpacks not only for ruck marches, but also for daily urban commutes, challenges, challenges, etc. This variety has given us a keen sense of what makes a rucksack perform well under load, how materials hold up over time, and which design features actually improve comfort and function.

Also, we understand the physical demands and nuances of rucking very well. That’s why you can trust the insights here come from real-world use.

How We Tested the GORUCK M24 Backpack?

Throughout testing, I tracked comfort, fit, ease of access, material wear, and the pack’s overall versatility in different environments and use cases, including:

  • A 10 km trail route, testing durability and comfort on uneven terrain.
  • Daily urban commute, carrying gym gear and essentials to see how it performs in city life.
  • 6-hour hike loaded with water, snacks, and camera equipment.
  • A weekend overnight trip, packing clothes and essentials to evaluate organization, space, and accessibility.
  • Several rainy-day rucking sessions, to observe how the waxed canvas material reacts to wet conditions.

Benefits of the GORUCK M24

  • Authentic Look: The Heritage Waxed Canvas delivers a classic style, not “tactical,” and still feels tough. Over time, the canvas develops a natural patina: creases, scuffs, and subtle wear marks that make the bag uniquely yours. It earns its “heritage” title not just in branding, but in how it visually evolves with use. This is the kind of ruck that looks better after a few hundred miles.
  • Comfort Under Load: Even with 30lbs packed in (plates, laptop, gym gear), the extra-padded straps and reinforced back panel helped distribute the weight evenly. There’s very little pressure buildup on the shoulders, and the ruck stays upright and stable on your back, even during longer sessions. It doesn’t sag or pull, which is especially impressive for a top-loader design.
  • Weather Resistance: Thanks to the Martexin wax finish, light rain beads off the canvas instead of soaking in. The material also does a great job repelling dirt and dust. After drying, the ruck stays flexible and doesn’t get that stiff, crunchy feel that some waxed bags develop.
  • Organized Interior: The interior layout is minimalist but functional. The lid mesh pocket keeps your small essentials accessible (keys, snacks, cables), while the main compartment offers space for weight, gear, or packing cubes. The rear laptop sleeve keeps your tech secure and separated from the rest. It’s not a GR1-style admin panel, but there’s just enough structure for day-to-day carry without overcomplicating the layout.
  • Strong Value: At $295, the M24 Heritage undercuts several GR1 models and is neck-and-neck with the Cordura M23. But with its premium waxed canvas, leather details, and Fidlock buckles, it arguably feels more refined.

Downsides of the GORUCK M24

  • Pocket changes: The M24 lacks admin pocket, internal water bottle pocket, and QAP pocket of the M23. Instead offers only external side bottle pockets.
  • Laptop fit issues: Smaller Waxed Canvas version doesn’t accommodate a 16” MacBook; 15” is the max.

  • Heritage lovers: Those who want a stylish, functional pack that ages with character.
  • Everyday commuters: Needing a single ruck that fits both laptop and workout gear without looking too tactical or bulky.
  • Weekend ruckers and hikers: Such users appreciate that balance between rugged construction and clean, refined aesthetics.
  • Minimalist packers: If you don’t need to carry half your house on a ruck march, you will prefer a simple, top-loading layout over hyper-compartmentalized bags.
  • Travelers on short trips: This one is compact, carry-on friendly.

Who Should Avoid GORUCK M24 and Why?

  • Those who want a lightweight rucksack: The canvas is heavier, so choose the Ripstop version if this is your concern.

Pricing and Shipping Information

The GORUCK M24 comes in two versions, each with its own material and price point. The M24 Heritage Waxed Canvas (our focus in this review) is available in both 21L and 26L, and both sizes are priced at $295.00. If you’re leaning toward something lighter, the M24 Lightweight Ripstop ROBIC® is available in 21L only and costs $245.00.

While GORUCK doesn’t include free shipping by default (unlike with their footwear), there’s a solid perk for Tribe ‘n Training members: FREE No-Rush Shipping anywhere in the U.S. For everyone else, including international buyers, shipping costs are calculated based on your location at checkout.

U.S. customers can also take advantage of 30-day returns, and GORUCK will cover the cost of return shipping if the M24 isn’t the right fit for you.

GORUCK M24 Lightweight Ripstop ROBIC®

The M24 Lightweight Ripstop ROBIC® is made of different, performance-focused materials. At $245, it’s $50 less than the waxed canvas model, and noticeably lighter overall. Both the 210D and 420D Robic Nylon are known for being abrasion-resistant and quick-drying, making it better suited for hot climates, wet environments, or high-volume training sessions.

Despite the material change, the core features remain: the top-loader layout, side zipper access, padded straps, and reinforced laptop compartment with false bottom are all still there.

It still carries weight well, still protects your gear, but does so in a way that’s better optimized for sweat, speed, and mileage.

Best GORUCK M24 Alternatives

Depending on your goals, another GORUCK model might suit you even better, while GORUCK Ruck Plate Carrier 3.0 can be good addition to your gear together with M24.

Rucker 4.0

If your priority is rucking for fitness and endurance, the GORUCK Rucker 4.0 is still the most purpose-built option in GORUCK’s lineup. It has built-in plate pockets, better sweat management, and no laptop compartment, because it’s not pretending to be your office bag. Compared to the M24, it’s more for training but less versatile for daily use.

GR1

The GORUCK GR1 remains the gold standard for a do-it-all rucksack. It’s built from 1000D Cordura, has full clamshell access, an internal frame sheet, and an unmatched internal organization system. If you need admin pockets, padded laptop storage, and long-term travel reliability, the GR1 outpaces the M24, but at a higher price and weight.

Bullet Ruck

The GORUCK Bullet Ruck is the ultra-light alternative. It’s compact, stripped down, and perfect for short rucks, quick workouts, or daily errands. Compared to the M24, it carries less, lacks structure, and has no laptop sleeve, but it wins on agility and simplicity.

Our Final Verdict on the GORUCK M24 Backpack

The Heritage Waxed Canvas is absolutely gorgeous in person. It’s a throwback to old-school rucking style, before ballistic nylon and MOLLE panels took over. On comfort, the M24 is really good. The padded straps and reinforced back panel feel broken-in faster than most models I’ve worn.

Functionally, it does what it sets out to do. It carries weight well. It handles daily essentials. It transitions easily from a 10K ruck to a coffee shop or train station. If you don’t carry a ton of gear or need a ton of separation, the M24 fits right in that sweet spot between mission-ready and daily needs.

On the other hand, if you like detailed organization, quick-access pockets, or internal admin setups, the M24 may not be perfect for you. It’s got a main compartment, a mesh lid pocket, two bottle pockets, and a laptop sleeve — and that’s it. No fancy front pocket. No zippered admin panel. No internal plate sleeve. For some, that’s exactly what they need. For others, it’s a step backwards, especially if you’re used to how well the M23 or GR1 breaks up gear inside the bag.

Also, the Heritage model looks nice, but it’s not the most practical in all climates. Not a deal-breaker, but something to consider. That’s why, if I were buying today and performance was the priority, I’d probably go with the M24 Ripstop ROBIC version. It’s the smarter pick if your rucks are primarily fitness-focused or you live somewhere humid.

That said, I still think GORUCK did a great job with this release. I like that they gave users two material options.

At the end of the day, the M24 isn’t meant to replace the M23, GR1 or Rucker. It’s carving out its own lane. And for the right kind of rucker, it’s a very solid lane to walk in.

Or ruck in, for that matter.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What’s the difference between a rucking backpack and a regular hiking backpack?

A rucking backpack is built to carry weight, not just gear. Unlike hiking packs that focus on light materials and ventilation, ruck packs prioritize durability, structure, and load stability. They’re reinforced to handle steel plates or bricks without collapsing or shifting. Most also have simplified designs to reduce failure points and distractions.

Can I use any backpack for rucking, or do I need a specific one like GORUCK?

You can ruck with any backpack, but not every pack will survive it or keep you injury-free. Most everyday bags aren’t made for holding static weight close to your spine. GORUCK and similar brands design their rucks to stay rigid under load, which helps with posture, comfort, and longevity. If you’re serious about rucking, a purpose-built pack is worth it.

Is waxed canvas a good material for year-round rucking conditions?

Waxed canvas holds up surprisingly well in all seasons. It’s water-resistant, tough, and develops character as it ages, but it can get heavy when soaked and hot under direct sun. For dry or cooler climates, it’s excellent. In constant humidity or rain, synthetic options might be more practical.

Why do some rucking backpacks have no waist belt?

Waist belts aren’t essential for rucking under 45 lbs. They help with load distribution during long treks, but also add bulk and limit upper-body movement. GORUCK intentionally leaves them out of some models for cleaner carry and mobility. If you need one, you can buy it later.

Can you ruck safely in the rain with a non-waterproof backpack?

Yes, but you’ve got to prep. Use dry bags for electronics and make sure your weight plates won’t rust. Most rucking packs are water-resistant, not waterproof, so expect them to get wet. Canvas absorbs more water, synthetics dry faster.
