If you are an experienced rucker, over time, you start to develop preferences. You start to notice not just how a ruck fits or carries weight, but how it performs under pressure, through rain, sweat, mud, and miles. If you are a beginner, you will also quickly start to see all those features that you like, as well as those that bother you.
The GORUCK GR0 has long been a trusted companion in the rucking world since it’s one of GORUCK’s original three rucks. compact, minimalist, and rugged to the core.
Maybe you heard of GORUCK Echo (it’s previous name), but now, with the launch of the GR0 X-PAC edition, GORUCK has offered a real technical upgrade in terms of materials that matter most.
Does this new version of the GR0 still deliver on the legendary toughness GORUCK is known for? Let me tell you in this GORUCK GR0 review.

The GORUCK GR0 X-PAC is available in four color options: Coyote, Dark Green, Multicam, and Black. The GORUCK GR0 – Ballistic Nylon Cordura is only available in Black.

Key Features of the GORUCK GR0 XPAC
- Exterior built out of X-PAC® VX21: A high-performance material that’s lighter than Cordura yet impressively tough.
- Opens flat: The clamshell design lets you fully open the ruck, so you can easily pack and get to your gear.
- Extra padded shoulder straps and top handle: GORUCK’s signature padding distributes weight evenly, making longer rucks and heavier carries far more manageable on your shoulders and hands.

Why We Decided to Review the GORUCK GR0 Rucksack
We’ve tested nearly every pack GORUCK has rolled out: Rucker 4.0, Bullet 15L, GR1, GR2, GR3, etc. So when the GR0 X-PAC dropped, it was natural for us to check out this new release.
It marked GORUCK’s move into ultralight, waterproof performance gear while still holding firm to what makes the brand trusted by ruckers, military, and outdoor diehards alike.
We were curious if the GR0 X-PAC could keep up with heavy loads, varied weather, and the real punishment we put our gear through. Could it handle ruck workouts? Urban commutes? Rain? Mud? Long days with plates? We wanted to find out as ruckers who rely on their packs day in and day out.
Reasons to Trust Our Expertise
We’ve put our rucks through hell, on purpose. We’re not just testing gear for the sake of a review; we use this stuff every week, sometimes daily. And our tests often last for months.
We’ve led local ruck clubs, organized community ruck events, and even used a weighted pack through GORUCK challenges that ran from dusk to dawn.
We’ve had packs fail mid-ruck. We’ve patched holes, replaced zippers, and learned what actually matters when your gear is the only thing standing between comfort and misery on a 15-mile trek. So when we talk about durability, comfort, and long-term value, we’re speaking from firsthand experience, not a product spec sheet.
How We Tested the GORUCK GR0 XPAC Backpack?
We tested the GR0 X-PAC over a 6-week period in multiple environments:
- Daily Carry: Office, coffee shops, errands
- Ruck Training: 10/20/30 lb plates, 30 lb filler bag
- Travel: 3-day weekend trip, carry-on only
- Weather Testing: Rain, wind, and a surprise snow flurry in early April
Benefits of the GORUCK GR0 XPAC
- Ultra-Light: The X-PAC material cuts weight noticeably. But despite the lighter shell, it doesn’t feel fragile. In fact, the fabric feels very durable.
- Weatherproof Enough for Real Life: VX21 is inherently water-resistant, and in our testing, we didn’t need a rain cover once. We rucked in a heavy rain, and everything inside stayed dry, including my laptop. That’s a big win.
- Same GORUCK Fit and Feel: If you’re a GORUCK fan, you’ll feel right at home.
- Versatile: This is one of the few packs that transitions from ruck training to urban EDC without looking like you’re going on a military op.
- Faster to Dry, Easier to Clean: After a muddy ruck, a quick hose down or wipe with a towel is usually all it takes.
- Low-Profile Yet High-Performance: The GR0 X-PAC manages to stay compact while still carrying serious weight. It doesn’t puff out awkwardly when fully loaded.
Downsides of the GORUCK GR0 XPAC
- Price Is High: At $275, it’s definitely a premium product. You’re paying for advanced materials and the Made in USA build, but it’s still a steep price if you’re new to rucking or GORUCK in general.

Who Are the GORUCK GR0 XPAC Ideal For?
- Everyday carry: It’s built to carry laptops, notebooks, chargers, and all the usual EDC gear.
- Travelers looking for a carry-on: At 16L, it’s compact enough for under-seat but roomy enough for daily excursions. The flat-open design also makes TSA checks and quick packing easy.
- Fitness folks who ruck with lighter weights (10–20 lbs): it’s not a huge ruck, but it’s ideal for short to mid-distance rucks, especially if you’re focused on mobility and pace.
- Urban commuters: The X-PAC material combined with the minimalist exterior gives off more of a “tech commuter” vibe than “weekend warrior.” You still get that GORUCK toughness, don’t worry.
- Hikers and day trekkers: If you’re hitting the trail for a few hours and don’t need a bulky frame pack, the GR0 X-PAC delivers with just enough space and way more resilience than typical outdoor brands.
Who Should Avoid GORUCK GR0 XPAC and Why?
- Heavy ruckers: If you ruck with heavy weight (40+ lbs regularly), this structure and capacity might not be the best possible option. You should check bigger options from GR product series, like GORUCK GR2.

Exploring Different GR0 Models: GR0 – Ballistic Nylon Cordura
The original GR0 earned its reputation with a 1000D Cordura exterior, one of the most durable fabrics. It has that familiar, broken-in feel that many long-time ruckers appreciate, and it thrives under heavy loads and abuse.
Compared to the X-PAC edition, the Cordura version is negligibly heavier, but it offers a touch more abrasion resistance and a softer, more flexible structure. That said, it doesn’t repel water quite as well, and once it gets wet, it takes longer to dry out. It also has a more classic look, while the X-PAC version feels more modern in both design and performance.
Best GORUCK GR0 Alternatives
If the GR0 X-PAC isn’t quite the right fit for your needs (or you’re just curious how it stacks up to other rucks in GORUCK’s lineup and beyond), there are a few good alternatives worth considering.
GORUCK Rucker 4.0
This is the best training-focused alternative. Rucker 4.0 is designed specifically for rucking and fitness, it has upgraded lumbar support, reflective strip, and plate pocket options. Heavier and more structured than the GR0 X-PAC, but better suited for serious fitness work.
GORUCK Bullet Ruck (Standard + X-PAC)
Want something smaller and lighter? The Bullet 15L (especially the X-PAC version) is perfect for EDC, short hikes, or light ruck sessions. It’s the most compact GORUCK bag, and incredibly versatile.
Centr Rucksack
Great for gym-goers and light backpackers, the Centr Rucksack offers a lot in that price range. It’s not built for GORUCK-level abuse, but for casual fitness use and daily carry, it’s just fine.
Our Final Verdict on the GORUCK GR0 X-PAC Backpack
What stood out the most to us is that this rucksack goes beyond just a material upgrade. We can say it’s the next evolution of one of the most famous rucking backpacks.
The form stays true to what made the GR0 a favorite: it hugs close to your back and holds structure even under load. But it’s the addition of X-PAC that elevates it. You get the same performance, now with better weather resistance, lighter carry weight, and a unique aesthetic that quietly stands apart from the sea of Cordura clones.
For ruckers who train rain or shine, for urban EDC folks who demand gear that works as hard as they do, and for many others, the GR0 X-PAC delivers.
If your rucking happens mostly indoors or in perfect weather, or if you’re just looking for a budget bag to bring your lunch and laptop, there are cheaper options that’ll do the job. But if you’re serious about rucking, the GR0 X-PAC is the choice.
Is the GR0 X-PAC suitable for rucking in tropical or humid environments?
The X-PAC material handles humidity and moisture better than traditional fabrics thanks to its waterproof laminate construction. It won’t soak up sweat or rain, which helps keep gear drier and reduces stink buildup.
What’s the best way to clean and maintain an X-PAC rucksack?
Wipe it down with a damp cloth after muddy or sweaty sessions, and air it out fully. Avoid machine washing or harsh detergents. X-PAC doesn’t absorb much water or stink, so regular spot cleaning goes a long way.
How does the GR0 X-PAC perform in muddy or sandy terrain?
It performs great. The slick, non-absorbent surface of X-PAC makes it easy to hose off after gritty workouts. Sand and mud don’t cling to it like they do with traditional fabrics.
How do smaller waterproof packs handle internal condensation during heavy activity?
Most waterproof packs, including the GR0 X-PAC, aren’t breathable, so condensation can build up inside during high-output sessions. Venting it post-use is key.
What’s the difference between water-resistant and fully waterproof ruck materials?
Water-resistant materials repel light rain or splashes but eventually soak through. Fully waterproof fabrics like X-PAC are designed to block out water entirely, even in prolonged exposure. Seams and zippers also play a big role in actual performance.
