GORUCK XPAC Review: Waterproof Gear Test for Wet-Weather Ruckers

Table of Contents

Now, let me say this upfront: I don’t believe every piece of rucking gear needs to be waterproof. Most of the time, water-resistant is enough, especially if you use dry bags for key items.

But when you’re rucking miles in pouring rain or rucking through soaked terrain where dry cover isn’t an option, having a waterproof rucksack suddenly makes a lot of sense. You stay focused on your pace, your form, your goal… not on whether your spare shirt is floating in a puddle inside your bag.

Since we are a team from all over the USA and Europe, we have experience from muddy trails in Normandy to urban rucks in New York, and we know the value of a pack that can take a beating and keep your gear dry.

When GORUCK released the Bullet X-PAC, I was intrigued. A 15L daypack built with waterproof X-PAC fabric and AquaGuard zippers? That sounded like something we needed to try.

After several weeks of testing it in unpredictable spring weather, here’s my review of the GORUCK Bullet X-PAC.

The GORUCK Bullet X-PAC

The GORUCK Bullet X-PAC is available in four color patterns:  Coyote, Dark Green, Multicam, and Charcoal.

Key Features of the GORUCK Bullet XPAC

  • Opens Flat for Easy Packing: The Bullet X-PAC is designed to open completely flat, a feature borrowed from military-style bags. This makes packing and unpacking much simpler. You can lay everything out, see what you’re working with, and avoid digging blindly into the bottom.
  • Streamlined Design with One Main Compartment and 3 Internal Pockets: This rucksack keeps things minimal and efficient. The single main compartment gives you unrestricted space for a ruck plate, layers, or daily gear. Inside, three internal pockets (two mesh and one zip) help you separate essentials like keys, snacks, or a phone without adding clutter.
  • Quick-Access Exterior Pocket for Essentials: On the front of the pack, you’ll find a quick-access pocket that’s perfect for items you need in a hurry. It’s easy to reach, even when you’re on the move.
  • YKK AquaGuard Zippers for Protection: Equipped with premium YKK AquaGuard zippers, the Bullet X-PAC does an amazing job of keeping out rain, grit, and dust. These water-resistant zippers are a common choice in high-performance outdoor gear for a reason.
  • Built with Weatherproof X-PAC VX21 Material: The standout feature of this backpack is its construction. The VX21 fabric is a multi-layer laminate that combines durability with advanced waterproofing. It sheds rain and doesn’t soak up moisture like traditional Cordura.

Why We Decided to Review the GORUCK XPAC Rucksack?

We decided to review the GORUCK Bullet X-PAC because it fills a very specific gap in the ruck world: a truly weatherproof, compact ruck.

As ruckers who train year-round (yes, wind, snow, and rain can’t deter us from trails) we’ve all had that moment where our gear was soaked, our electronics were at risk, or our socks shirt was unusable after a wet ruck. So, when GORUCK announced a 15L Bullet built with X-PAC VX21 fabric and AquaGuard zippers, we had to put it to the test.

The original Bullet Ruck has always been a favorite for short rucks and daily carry, but the addition of waterproof construction makes the X-PAC version a serious contender for anyone training in rough conditions.

We wanted to see if it could deliver on that promise.

Reasons to Trust Our Expertise

We don’t just write about rucking, but we live it. Our team has thousands of miles with weighted packs on our backs. We’ve trained in every season, across trails, city streets, and beaches, and we’ve done it with everything from budget rucksacks to top-tier builds like the GORUCK GR series.

We evaluate every detail, like stitching, strap fatigue, water intrusion, zipper performance, and load stability. Because if a pack fails mid-ruck, we’re the ones dealing with it.

How We Tested the GORUCK XPAC Backpack?

To give the GORUCK Bullet X-PAC a fair and thorough evaluation, we put it through the kind of scenarios that ruckers actually face. We subjected the Bullet X-PAC to:

  • Rainy Rucks: Tested its waterproof claims during heavy rain.
  • Urban Commutes: Assessed comfort and functionality in daily use.
  • Trail Hikes: Evaluated durability and load management on uneven terrain.
  • Weight Carrying: Loaded it with a 20lb plate to test comfort and strap performance.

Benefits of the GORUCK XPAC

  • Waterproof Performance: The combination of X-PAC VX21 fabric and AquaGuard zippers kept our gear bone dry during rain. Even after rucking for over an hour in steady rain, the contents of the pack were untouched by moisture.
  • Lightweight and Durable: The pack is impressively light, making it ideal for fast-paced rucks or long wear during travel. The materials feel premium but don’t weigh you down like some overbuilt tactical bags tend to do.
  • Compact Size: The 15L capacity is perfect for everyday tasks, quick rucks, or gear-light events where you want to stay mobile. It keeps your load tight against your back, which is key for agility and posture.
  • Comfortable Straps: The shoulder straps are padded and curved just right to prevent digging or hot spots, even under a 20lb plate. They stay put during movement.
  • Low-Profile Design: The streamlined silhouette means you don’t get snagged on branches, doors, or tight transit spaces.

Downsides of the GORUCK XPAC

  • Price Point: Priced at $160, the Bullet X-PAC sits firmly in the premium tier for a 15L daypack. While you’re paying for high-end materials and workmanship, the cost may feel steep if you’re used to budget or mid-range packs. For new ruckers or those who don’t frequently train in wet conditions, this is probably not an essential investment.

Who Are the GORUCK XPAC Ideal For?

  • Urban Ruckers: Those needing a compact, waterproof pack for city environments will appreciate how the Bullet X-PAC handles rain and crowded public spaces. Its sleek design does not attract attention but still performs like a tactical workhorse.
  • Short-Distance Ruckers: Ideal for 3–5 mile rucks where minimal gear is needed, just water, a weight plate, and a few essentials. The smaller volume will make you pack more disciplined packing.
  • Everyday Carriers: Perfect for daily use, offering durability and weather resistance for anyone who commutes or works remotely. It fits tech, books, and gym gear without looking overly tactical. If you want one pack that can transition from a rainy morning run to a coffee shop work session, this one fits.
  • Travelers and Minimalist Packers: If you travel light or prefer one-bag setups, the Bullet X-PAC is a solid option for carry-on or daypack use. It slides under airplane seats and into tight overhead bins easily.
  • Wet-Weather Fitness Enthusiasts: If you train outdoors in all seasons, the waterproof build becomes a huge asset. You can toss wet clothes or gear inside without worrying about consequences.

Who Should Avoid GORUCK XPAC and Why?

  • Long-Distance Ruckers: If you need a lot of space/capacity for extended treks, you will probably find the 15L Bullet X-PAC too limited. It simply doesn’t offer the space required for extra water, food, clothing layers, first-aid supplies, and a few ruck plates that longer rucks demand. GORUCK did not create this backpack for that purpose.

Exploring Different GORUCK XPAC Editions

This review focuses on the Bullet X-PAC, yet GORUCK’s waterproof X-PAC lineup includes several other models designed for different rucking and travel needs. Each edition uses the same weather-resistant materials but varies in size, structure, and purpose. Here’s a quick breakdown of the other X-PAC options in the GORUCK family:

GR0 X-PAC

The GR0 X-PAC (previously known as the GR Echo) is a 16L minimalist pack that delivers waterproof performance in a slightly roomier build than the Bullet, but smaller than the GR1. It’s great for everyday carry or short rucks when you need just a bit more space without jumping to a full-sized pack.

GR1 X-PAC

The GR1 X-PAC comes in a 21L/26L size, so it’s a solid middle ground between compact and spacious. With the same waterproof features, it’s better suited for longer rucks where you need room. It comes with a price — over $300, same as regular GR1.

GR2 X-PAC

With 34L capacity, the GR2 X-PAC is made for travel and longer rucks. Its internal layout offers multiple compartments for serious organization. Although it’s bigger, it’s very comfortable and lightweight, just like the basic GR2 model.

GR3 X-PAC

The GR3 X-PAC is the biggest of the bunch at 35L/45L, built for multi-day trips, deployment-style packing, or expedition rucks. It offers all the water-resistant features of its smaller siblings but with the capacity to carry everything you need. As GORUCK says for the GR3 it’s a “carry-on rucksack built for world travel.”

Best GORUCK XPAC Alternatives

If the GORUCK Bullet X-PAC isn’t quite what you’re looking for, there are solid alternatives worth considering.

Rucker 4.0

The Rucker 4.0 is GORUCK’s flagship ruck for training and events, purpose-built for weighted work. It features reinforced shoulder straps, a padded back panel, a built-in frame sheet, and dedicated ruck plate compartments. While it’s heavier and bulkier than the Bullet X-PAC, it’s ideal if your priority is carrying serious weight. It’s not waterproof, but it’s bombproof in terms of durability.

Bullet Ruck – Classic

The Classic Bullet Ruck shares the same 15L volume as the X-PAC but is constructed with GORUCK’s signature 1000D Cordura nylon. It’s extremely tough and has that traditional GORUCK build quality. It comes in different color options, but the price is the same.

Centr Rucksack

The Centr Rucksack is a solid choice if you need a smaller backpack, but want to save money. It’s not as durable as GORUCK products and wasn’t designed specifically for heavy weighted rucking. Plus, it’s not waterproof, so you’re trading off price for product quality.

Our Final Verdict on the GORUCK Bullet X-PAC Waterproof Backpack

After weeks of rucking through spring rain with the GORUCK Bullet X-PAC on my back, I can say it’s a serious upgrade for anyone who regularly trains or commutes in unpredictable weather. The XPAC version of the Bullet feels like it was made for those days when the skies don’t cooperate, but training and work still needs to get done.

Of course, 15L isn’t going to be enough for long-distance events. It’s not meant to be your everything-in-one pack. But for shorter rucks, EDC, travel, or even tossing in a change of clothes and some weight for a 3-mile walk — it excels.

And the waterproofing? Legit. I didn’t have to baby this ruck once. I tossed it in the wet grass during workouts and once even left it exposed on the cafe patio during a downpour: my gear stayed dry. Yes, your laptop will also remain totally safe and dry, don’t worry.

It’s also one of the more comfortable small packs I’ve used. The slim profile hugs your back nicely, and once you find the ideal strap fit, it’s perfect.

Is waterproofing a must-have for every rucker? Not necessarily. But if you live in a wet climate, train outdoors year-round, or just want the peace of mind that your gear is protected no matter what, you’ll immediately notice the difference with the Bullet X-PAC.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What makes X-PAC fabric different from traditional rucksack materials?

X-PAC is a multi-layer laminate fabric originally made for sailcloth, meaning it’s built to handle brutal weather. Unlike standard Cordura, it’s lighter, waterproof, and has a structure that holds its shape.

Are all GORUCK rucksacks waterproof or just the XPAC models?

However, only the XPAC line is designed to be waterproof. GORUCK’s classic packs like the GR1 and Rucker are highly water-resistant but not fully sealed. If you’re rucking in constant rain, XPAC is the safer bet.

Is it necessary to use additional rain covers with waterproof rucksacks like the XPAC?

Nope, not at all. The XPAC fabric and sealed zippers do the job well on their own. Unless you’re hiking through a hurricane, a rain cover would be overkill.

How does waterproof fabric hold up in freezing conditions or snow?

XPAC performs well in cold weather, it stays waterproof and holds its shape. That said, the fabric can stiffen slightly in below-freezing temps, but it won’t crack or fail. Just make sure your zipper pulls are easy to grab with gloves.

Do XPAC backpacks require special care or maintenance to maintain waterproofing?

Not really, but be gentle with them. Do not machine wash, overstuff, or abuse the zippers. A little basic care keeps the waterproof layers intact and performing like new.
