The Best Rucking Boots For Flat Feet

Table of Contents

If you could travel 50 years back in time and ask a general practitioner, orthopedist, or physical therapist what they think about flat feet, they would probably tell you that it is a terrible condition that must be treated immediately. New findings have shown us that the prognosis is not grim, even if flat feet are left untreated. They can be perfectly functional. However, the influence of footwear is significant. (1)

So, finding the best rucking boots for flat feet is even more important for those with this condition than for those with a higher arch.

Since I have flat feet, I am very well aware of all the potential problems, limitations, and challenges that this condition sometimes brings. That’s why I explored the best boots for flat feet for you (and for myself).

Best Rucking Boots for Flat Feet

I didn’t want to divide boots by category, as I did in “Best shoes” and “Best boots,” because all these models are primarily good for flat feet. Therefore, there is no need for categories, so let’s start.

Salomon Men’s QUEST ELEMENT GORE-TEX Leather

Salomon is often the go-to option for many experienced ruckers, hikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts (including me). This is not a coincidence; Salomon has proven over the past almost 80 years that you can always rely on their footwear.

For all those with flatfoot conditions, I find Salomon Men’s QUEST ELEMENT GORE-TEX Leather rucking boot the most comfortable.

Crafted with premium Nubuck leather and GORE-TEX protection, these shoes are designed to withstand challenging terrains. Experience has shown me that the combination of leather and synthetic materials is the best. That combination brings breathability, durability, and comfort that those materials alone cannot.

This model is higher cut, which adds an extra layer of protection, making it ideal for challenging ruck marches.

One of the standout features is the patented ADV-C chassis, which provides exceptional stability on uneven ground. This stability is crucial for maintaining balance and reducing fatigue on long rucks in general. And it’s even more important for those with flat feet since it affects stability and foot fatigue.

Whether you’re rucking, road running, trail running, hiking or need a tactical boot for special forces, the QUEST ELEMENT GTX is a no-brainer.

Merrell Men’s Moab 2 Mid

Merrell Men’s Moab 2 Mid model is primarily famous because it is very affordable hiking boot. However, that is certainly not his only quality, on the contrary. Once you analyze all the features, you will be surprised how Merrell even makes it possible to offer such a good boot, close to best military boots, at this price.

The blend of leather and mesh uppers provides durability and breathability. And we all know that is crucial during long, challenging rucks. The Vibram TC5 outsole with a 5mm lug depth will keep your feet stable and prevent falls even on slippery surfaces.

The primary reason I chose this model for flat feet is the air cushion in the heel. This part absorbs shock and adds stability, and the EVA midsole further enhances stability and comfort, so my feet were not sore after several hours with a heavy backpack.

Corvara GTX Mid

Although the manufacturer is not as famous as the others I mentioned in this guide, it certainly deserves your attention. The LOWA Lightweight Backpacking Boots represent a significant advancement in hiking and backpacking footwear.

You might think they are heavier because they weigh 674 grams per shoe, but they give a lightweight feeling while providing the stability of heavy shoes.

The boots feature a molded cuff that wraps comfortably around your ankle, providing much-needed ankle support for individuals with flat feet. Another impressive aspect of these boots is the heel brake, which is in charge of traction.

The GORE-TEX lining guarantees waterproof protection, keeping your feet dry in wet conditions, while the Mountain Insole and DynaPU®+ midsole deliver a balance of support, durability, and rebound.

While the boots may not be cheap, their production in Germany and Italy is a testament to their high quality.

Tracker Forest Esc

How good are barefoot shoes for flat feet? I’m not 100% sure. Supposedly, minimalist shoe can help strengthen the feet while keeping them in a natural position, and that certainly makes sense.

Most such footwear is too hard for me, but Tracker Forest Esc is an exception. Kudos to the manufacturer for balancing the features of barefoot shoes and the comfort of regular shoes. The reason is the Active Ortholite Performance Insole, made from 98% recycled PU foam.

Rest assured, the Tracker Forest Esc is not just any boot. It’s a product of collaboration with survival experts, ensuring it’s optimized for forest environments. This makes it ideal for the most adventurous ruckers, yet versatile enough for a range of landscapes.

The outsole was created by the famous tire manufacturer Michelin, so you can be sure that it will remain the same even after many years.

The product is eco-friendly and reduces environmental impact.

Hoka TenNine Hike GTX

The Hoka TenNine Hike GTX model doesn’t look like something you’d wear to your next ruck, but more like a walking shoe or running shoe.  But trust me, walking in them is like walking on clouds.

Because of the efficiency of the design, the heel-to-toe transition was so smooth and comfortable that I did not feel fatigued even after the whole day.

One more thing I have to mention is durability. I was skeptical when I bought them because they don’t give the impression of shoes that will help you carry 30% of your body weight in a backpack while walking on rocks. But I will admit my mistake. Hoka has again made amazing shoes that are breathable, comfortable, durable, and waterproof.

Choosing the Right Footwear for Flat Feet

Wearing the proper footwear can significantly impact foot health, especially for those with flat feet.

Key features to look for are:

  • Arch support is the most important feature for those with flat feet. It maintains foot alignment and prevents discomfort.
  • Cushioning is a lifesaver for flat feet. It’s not just about comfort, but also about reducing stress. Flat feet tend to suffer more stress, and cushioning is essential for absorbing shock and reducing impact stress.
  • Stability and support help prevent overpronation and stabilize your flat feet during movement.

Along with these main features, pay attention to all other features, the same as when you buy any other type of footwear — size, material, durability, breathability, water resistance, sole quality, and so on.

Conclusion

The right boots will help you enjoy rucking without the discomfort and foot pain often associated with flat feet.

And don’t let this condition prevent you from enjoying sports and other activities. Michael Jordan and LeBron James are just some of the many famous athletes who have flat feet. If they could become one of the best ever, you can also practice rucking regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common issues people with flat feet face when rucking?

In my experience, arch and heel are two areas where most people with flat feet feel pain or at least discomfort. Overpronation, where the feet roll inward excessively, is one to blame. Blisters on the inside of the foot, especially the big toe, are common as well.

Are custom orthotics and insoles useful for rucking with flat feet?

Custom orthotics and insoles can be used with rucking boots. I prefer best insoles over orthotics because there is a lack of evidence on the effect of foot orthoses for flatfoot in adults. (2) On top of that, it can weaken muscles and other structures that rely too much on orthotics. That’s why I recommend insoles.

Can wearing the wrong rucking boots worsen the condition of flat feet?

Wearing the wrong rucking boots can indeed worsen flat feet, but it is not closely related to this condition. Improper rucking boots, without arch support and cushioning, will hurt every foot type.
